100 Mile Ruck March Challenge
Julia’s 100 Mile Ruck Fundraiser
I’m thrilled to be fundraising for Why Me & Sherry’s House leading up to my 100 mile ruck. This Worcester-based nonprofit supports families as they navigate childhood cancer – from initial diagnosis to ongoing care for years to come, this organization supports not only the patient, but the entire family. This cause is close to my heart.
In early 2020, I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer & while I was an adult navigating this process & not a child, it was still terrifying & dramatically life changing. While I’m now back to running ultra marathons & leading a company, I still deal with cancer-treatment side effects, dramatically increased medical costs, & have a lifetime of medications & testing ahead of me.
When I walk 25 miles a day for 4 days, carrying all of my supplies on my back, & camping out at night for this 100 mile ruck – I will be almost exactly 2 years out from active treatment. This will be a huge challenge for me, but I know that if I can get through cancer treatment in a pandemic, I can do this.
A ruck march is a military term for walking with a weighted rucksack, essentially a big backpack, Rucking often implies traveling long distances while carrying what you need to survive.
The 100 Mile Ruck March Challenge is a military inspired event, where a small group of Athletes will Ruck (hike) 25 miles a day for 4 days. Camping out each night on the farm of a local brewery and continuing the march at sunrise each morning. Athletes will carry everything they will need for this 4-day event on their backs, navigate the 100 mile course, cook their own meals, set up and break down their own camps each night, tend to their feet and bodies, all in an attempt to earn the coveted 100 Mile Ruck March Finisher Medal.
Please help me by giving to support this organization & this HUGE physical challenge.
