Remy’s Ride for Kids with Cancer
Remy’s Ride
My name is Remy St. Germain and I am 16 years old. I am riding my bike from Why Me & Sherry’s House to Gillette Stadium on Saturday September 17th, the same day the New England Revolution will be playing their “Kick Childhood Cancer” Game. I am doing this 50 mile bike ride in honor of my cousin’s passing that took place just over a decade ago. I wanted to do something big for her, as big as her life would have been. Sophia died of Leukemia when she was just four years old. Unfortunately, Sophia had to experience way too many negative events at her age, but she never let it affect her. She was brave in her journey and fought everyday, no matter what news came her way. She put on a tough face and looked at her challenges straight on.
As I took a shower after my soccer game, just days before the ten year mark of her passing, I read the number on the back of my jersey. Number 25. I remembered why I chose the number, the reason being that she died on June 25th, 2012. I wear the number on my back to continue her legacy and carry her light and kindness through the world. This way, I know that she is always with us, looking down, watching us.
With this bike ride, I hope to raise awareness towards childhood cancer, and funds for Why Me Sherry’s House. I hope that my actions can help other young children with big dreams like Sophia, hoping to live them out. It will give me a sense of accomplishment that I haven’t really had in some time. It will be Sophia, however, that will have given me the fight to continue biking for the full four and a half hours or so. This will be the most difficult task that I have faced, but I know that it will be well worth it when I know that I have helped children in a similar situation to Sophia’s.
